The final panel of the night happened around 8:15 PM.

Black Dynamite, if you haven’t seen it, is a film from a couple of years ago that parodies old Blaxploitation  films. Black Dynamite, played by Michael Jai White, is a sort of alpha male character who will destroy any man who comes in his path and love any woman who does the same. He receives news one day that his brother had been killed and swears revenge for him by killing the drug cartel and dealers that did it. The movie is full of kung fu fights and various kinds of characters, and is pretty hilarious.

[adult swim] picked the animated series up for a season recently. It will be produced at Titmouse, and will premiere July 8th, 2012.

The panel included Black Dynamite himself, Michael Jai White, Byron Minns who plays the character Bullhorn, Kym Whitley who stars as Honey Bee, executive producer Carl Jones (who also worked on The Boondocks,) and producer Scott Sanders. We were shown a reel of various cast members and guest stars (most of which I didn’t recognize.) Those who did stick out– Arsenio Hall and Snoop Dogg will guest star in the show.

Most of the questions in the Q&A focused on Boondocks and Freaknik since Carl Jones was there. People asked about crossovers, which he seemed reluctant about. There was discussion of the show though: Jones said that despite their use of the n-word in Boondocks, it wouldn’t be used in Black Dynamite. The audience of the show gives writers a bit of apprehension about the comedic tone, as well– but that doesn’t really stop them from doing what they’d like to do. One episode title that was said was “Honkey Kong”. There will be episodes about Richard Pryor and the Jackson 5 in the series as well.

The cast did say that the sequel to the film is still happening despite the show. So, if you’re a fan of the film and the show, look out for that.

The show’s pilot is available on the [adult swim] website now. The premiere date, again, is July 8th, 2012.

This being the last panel, we finally headed out. Achy from sitting for five hours in one room, but happy with everything we got to see. The trek home began, followed by bedtime, so we could wake up and head back the next day. There was much more to do.

New York Comic-Con 2011 was a blast.
